Our Founder's Story
Steve Lepke
At Fido & Finch, we go the extra mile to make sure our pet products are as safe and thoughtfully designed as the medical devices we create.
The story starts with our founder, a medical device developer who was shocked to learn that pet products are held to virtually no safety standards. Steve spent years engineering products where safety wasn't negotiable, where every material and design choice had to meet rigorous testing. Then he looked at the pet industry and realized his dog's toys had fewer safety requirements than a tongue depressor.
If we wouldn't compromise on safety for people, why should it be any different for our pets, who are also our family members? He couldn't shake that question. So he founded Fido & Finch for pet owners who would be just as shocked to learn this disturbing fact. He also set a new certification for safe pet products by establishing the Golden Finch Pet Products Standard of Excellence.
At Fido & Finch, we ensure our products give you peace of mind and give your pets the care our furry family members deserve.
What is the Golden Finch Pet Products Standard of Excellence?
We needed to do more.
We care so much about the health and well-being of our companion animals that we started the first organization to certify that products are safe for our animal companions.
The Legend of Fido & Finch
The Day Everything Changed
It was one of those early spring mornings when everything feels new. The air was still and the light was soft. Fido trotted out into the yard, doing what he always does, patrolling, protecting, and making sure our little world was in order.
Then he stopped.
In the grass lay a small yellow finch, one wing bent and trembling.
Fido didn’t bark or chase. He lowered himself, slow and careful, until he was close enough to breathe the same air. Then, with impossible gentleness, he lifted the bird in his mouth and carried her to me and placed her into my outstretched hand.
As Fido watched, I fashioned a small nest near the garden wall, where the fence and plants would give her shelter. We placed two small bowls nearby with seeds and water.
Fido stayed near her every day. He guarded the garden as if it were sacred ground, keeping watch while she healed. When he was inside, he would sit by the door, ears pricked up, his eyes fixed on the place where she rested. He always knew when she stirred.
And then one morning, she flew. She circled the garden again and again, her song bright and certain, before fluttering down and landing softly on Fido’s back
That’s when I understood what I was witnessing.
This wasn't a rescue story with a beginning and an end.
This was a friendship. A real one. Built on vulnerability and trust.
Two creatures, one strong and one small, who saw in each other something worth protecting.
